Peter's Pool

The Peter's Pool Track is a short, accessible walk near Franz Josef Glacier, leading to a tranquil kettle lake formed by retreating ice. The 1.1 km return trail (approximately 20 mins walk) winds through lush rainforest, offering reflective views of the glacier valley and surrounding mountain peaks.

It's an ideal spot for photographers seeking serene landscapes without extensive hiking. The walk begins at the Glacier Access Road car park, approximately 4 km (5 mins drive) south of Franz Josef township.

St James Church

St James Church, constructed in 1931, is a historic Anglican church nestled in Franz Josef Glacier. Designed in the Tudor Revival style, the church features clear glass windows behind the altar, originally framing a view of Franz Josef Glacier—a scene captured on a 1946 Peace Stamp. Over time, as the glacier receded, the vista shifted to encompass the Waiho River and surrounding mountains. Located on the south of the Franz Josef township, 650m from Bella Vista Motel, approximately 10 mins walk, the church offers visitors a serene and picturesque experience, reflecting the rich history and natural beauty of the region.

Cron Street is a quiet, parallel street running alongside the main highway through the Franz Josef township. It is home to various accommodations and tour operators, offering stunning panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and glaciers.

Our Franz Josef motel is one of the few two-story buildings on Cron Street, facing the glacier valley. The motel provides expansive views of the glacier valley and the majestic surrounding mountains. Guests can enjoy vistas of the impressive Fritz Range and its glaciers, including the Croz Glacier, from the upstairs walkway or the car park. Upstairs King Studio rooms also offer breathtaking views directly from the room. The motel’s central location ensures easy access to local attractions, restaurants, shops, and activity centers.

Glow Worms

Franz Josef Glacier offers captivating glow-worm experiences along its walking tracks. The Terrace Walk, located at the southern end of the village near the 'Our Lady of the Alps' church, is a 1.8 km loop through lush rainforest. At night, visitors can spot glow-worms illuminating the forest, especially around large fallen trees.

Another intriguing spot is the Tatare Tunnels Walk, accessible from Cowan Street. About 10-minute walk from the motel. This 3.6 km return track leads to historic mining tunnels. Inside, turning off your torch reveals glow-worms adorning the tunnel ceilings.

Both walks provide unique opportunities to experience the natural beauty of the area, with the glow-worms adding a magical touch to the nocturnal rainforest ambiance. This experience allows for some of the most unique photos that can be taken in New Zealand.
